The School Social Work Certificate Program is part of Colorado State University’s teaching licensure programs through NCATE, or the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. As such, the School of Social Work works closely with the School of Education to ensure that social work students comply with all licensure and NCATE Standards.

The School Social Work Certificate Program, which leads to the attainment of licensure as a school social worker in Colorado, is designed as a two course sequence intended to prepare students and practitioners to provide services in the public school setting. The certificate program consists of two interrelated courses that provide additional education and training to social workers. These courses are vital in order to ensure that school social workers can practice as members of multidisciplinary teams that assess a student’s cognitive, adaptive, and social/emotional functioning. Students currently pursuing a BSW or MSW degree can enroll in the two required courses or can take these classes after receipt of their degree.

To be eligible for licensure, however, individuals must have a Master’s in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited school of social work, pass the PLACE exam, or be a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) and have completed the following coursework:

- SOWK 560 – Social Work Practice/Schools - (3 credits)
- SOWK 561/814 – School & Community: People with Disabilities - (3 credits)
- NOTE: The School Social Work course (SOWK 560) is ONLY taught in the summer, for five consecutive Fridays, usually starting the first Friday in June. However, please contact the School of Social Work regarding the class start dates, as these may change. Class runs from 10:00 am through 7:00 pm.
- ALSO, the disabilities course (S)WK 561/814) is offered through Continuing Education in the fall. Students interested in taking the class must register with that department.
