Certificate Overview

Mediation is a rapidly growing field of study. An alternative to the legal system, therapy or counseling, the facilitative mediation process empowers people to resolve conflict in a wide variety of areas including divorce/child custody, health care, workplace, and arbitration.

Colorado State University's School of Social Work has developed courses that train professionals to negotiate and resolve disputes. The program provides participants with outstanding faculty and a challenging, practice-based curriculum that enhances and advances any career, including those in the field of social work.

You will be prepared to solve disputes and manage conflict in a wide range of employment settings. Mediation is a rapidly growing field of study providing communication, negotiation, problems-solving, and conflict resolution skills that are transferable to a variety of fields. Due to the nature of interpersonal conflicts, the skills of mediation enhance teamwork and collaboration in everyday life.

Curriculum

The graduate certificate requires 9 credit hours and consists of two phases. Phase I is the required Foundations of Mediation class. This class provides 40-hours of foundation material recommended by many mediation organizations including the Colorado Council of Mediators. Students who have already taken a 40 hour mediation course may apply for a waiver. See FAQ for details.

Phase II includes classes with advanced skills in specific focus areas. To earn the certificate students must successfully complete Foundations and two advanced classes.

On-line Courses:

Fundamentals of Mediation and Conflict Resolution will be available on-line in the spring of 2012. If you are a current on-line student needing to complete the Graduate Certificate, advanced on-line classes will be available beginning fall semester 2011.
